- Calorie balance determines whether weight will be gained or lost.
- Macronutrients (protein, fat, and carbs that make up the foods we eat), help determine whether that change is fat or muscle mass.
- Micronutrients, like vitamins and minerals, help maintain health and prevent diseases.
- Meal timing is what you eat and when.
- Supplements are mostly useless. There are a few worth consideration, but nobody failed to reach their physique goals because they didn’t take a supplement.
Further, the liberating news should be that the layers of the pyramid are not of equal importance!
You will get a disproportionate return on your efforts from focusing on the first few layers of the pyramid.
So, if you stick to your calorie budget, eat enough protein, avoid skewing your carbs and fat intake to the extreme, eat like an adult (including fruits and vegetables), and avoid doing anything silly with nutrient timing, you’re all set.

Matt Dustin graduated with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2012, interned at the Under Armour Performance Center in Baltimore, spent several years as a personal trainer in Maryland before moving to San Diego to work at a sports physical therapy clinic. In 2017, Matt moved fully online as a nutrition coach, eventually becoming a mentor for other coaches. He joined Ripped Body in 2021 and has authored three nutrition books.
